Day of issue and stamp presentation of the commemorative stamp "200-year anniversary of Piatnik"
Gaming fun with a long-standing tradition
A Viennese company with a long tradition is celebrating its 200th birthday: Austrian Post is congratulating Piatnik with particularly original miniature sheets in playing card format.
In 1842, Ferdinand Piatnik, a trained card painter, took over a Viennese card painting business that had been founded in 1824. The business is still run by the Piatnik family today, under the name "Wiener Spielkartenfabrik Ferd. Piatnik & Söhne". In 1891, the company switched to modern industrial production. After the Second World War, the company began to produce board games and puzzles in addition to playing cards, and also developed new games such as "Activity". Piatnik, with its unmistakable company logo showing a jockey on a horse, is now the largest games publisher in Austria, with products available in 72 countries worldwide.
The four different commemorative miniature sheets for the 200th anniversary are playing cards with the value ace in the four colours of hearts, diamonds, spades and clubs. The material is cardboard, which was treated with the varnish used for real playing cards after printing. The self-adhesive stamp itself shows the characteristic Piatnik logo, it is punched out and can be removed. The block can also be used as a playing card, as each stamp block is part of a set with the four other playing cards of the respective colour, i.e. king, queen, jack and 10. The sets in all four colours make up a complete exclusive card deck with twenty playing cards for playing cards.
