First day of the commemorative stamp 100-year anniversary of broadcasting in Austria
Hello Austria!
One hundred years ago, with the founding of RAVAG, the foundation for professional broadcasting in Austria was laid. Austrian Post is celebrating this with a commemorative stamp.
After the First World War, the new medium of radio broadcasting also conquered the civilian world. In 1923, the private station "Radio Hekaphon" in Vienna broadcast a radio programme for the first time—however, without a valid licence. In February 1924, Oskar Czeija and the company Schrack finally received a state concession with the exclusive right to conduct "broadcasting and wireless telegraphy and telephony" in Austria. Later that same year, RAVAG (Radio-Verkehrs-AG) was founded, and on 1 October 1924, "Radio Vienna" aired the first radio programme from the studio on the top floor of the Ministry of Defence on Stubenring. The monthly broadcasting fee at that time was 2 schillings.
In the course of the Anschluss in 1938, RAVAG was liquidated. After the Second World War and the end of Nazi rule in 1945, "Reichssender Wien" became "Radio Vienna" again, albeit based in the Russian occupation zone. The three Western occupying powers operated their own radio stations; the American station "Red-White-Red" was particularly popular among the population. After the occupation period, the stations were consolidated into Österreichischer Rundfunk (Austrian Broadcasting), and in 1955 the first television broadcasts were aired. Since 2001, the ORF has been a foundation under public law. In addition to television and radio stations, it also operates an internet portal.
