Opening of the special post office Oberndorf "Silent Night, Holy Night"
Every year in advent, from 8th to 24th December, a special post office is set up in the Bruckmannhaus in Oberndorf’s Silent Night District, where visitors can send their Christmas post. Additionally, commemorative cancellations are offered for collectors and enthusiasts.
In 2024, the 100th anniversary of the foundation stone laying for the Silent Night Chapel will be celebrated. This chapel, a memorial to the two creators of the world-famous Christmas carol "Silent Night! Holy Night!"—Franz Xaver Gruber and Joseph Mohr—stands on the site of the former St. Nicholas Church. The original church, which had to be demolished due to structural issues, was where the carol was performed for the first time during Midnight Mass on 24th December 1818. The foundation stone for the chapel was laid on 17th August 1924. Construction began in 1928, and the Silent Night Chapel was officially inaugurated on 15th August 1937.
The Silent Night Chapel draws thousands of visitors each year, especially during the Christmas season, as they come to pay tribute to the creators of the carol. "Silent Night! Holy Night!" is widely regarded as a message of peace for the world and is sung in over 300 languages and dialects. During the annual Silent Night commemoration on Christmas Eve, the carol is performed in its original version outside the chapel, creating a truly magical and reflective moment.
