From the classroom to an Austrian Post lorry Julian's path at Austrian Post

One might think that Julian’s career path could not have unfolded any differently. As the son of a haulage company owner, he was immersed in the world of engines and transport from a young age. It was clear where his passion lay. "After completing my school education at HTLBA (Higher Technical Institute) Eisenstadt, I faced the decision of how to begin my professional journey. My passion for engines and transport was undeniable, and when I came across a post about Austrian Post on TikTok in the spring, I knew I had found my goal. My first, friendly interaction with Katharina Kuchner from the recruitment team cemented my decision to become an HGV driver for the Post. With the best qualifications and the necessary driving licences in hand, I started working in the company’s transport logistics division just a month later."
Getting started in practice
"For about a week, I accompanied experienced colleagues on their routes before taking the wheel of a Volvo FM myself. In coordination with the dispatch team, my first independent routes were planned. At first, the varying working hours were a bit of a challenge, as some shifts started as early as 1 a.m. However, after an initial adjustment period, it quickly became routine."
"My lorry, or rigid truck, is equipped with the latest safety features, such as a reversing camera and a fatigue detection system, and has an unladen weight of around 12 tonnes. With the trailer, I transport up to 40 tonnes. My main route is between Graz and Vienna, but I also cover night-time routes in Burgenland and Waldviertel. Wherever I’m needed, I’m ready to go."
Sustanability and environmental awareness
"Austrian Post is fully aware of its environmental responsibility and has set itself the goal of achieving CO₂-free deliveries by 2030. As the youngest HGV driver in the transport logistics fleet, I’m particularly keen to contribute to this initiative. Since May 2024, Transport Logistics East has been operating two new electric HGVs, which run daily between the logistics centre in Vienna and Schwechat Airport. These vehicles replace two diesel lorries and save around 117 tonnes of direct CO₂ emissions each year. I’m proud that we are making a contribution to a sustainable future," says Julian.
What motivates me
"From the very beginning, I found the work exciting, varied, and challenging. The team spirit and support from experienced colleagues motivate me on every journey. I feel truly welcomed as part of the team. It’s important to me that I am valued in the group—every opinion counts!"
Conclusion
"I can see myself working as a dispatcher in a few years’ time, supporting my colleagues in the HGV driver’s seat from the office. I’m convinced that my dedication will pay off. I enjoy learning, I’m open to new experiences, and I can live out my passion in my job every single day."
